Best Romantic Movies to Watch with Your Other Half in 2022

Valentine’s Day is usually associated with celebrating lovers, and this mood pervades the entire month of February. At this time of the year, people go over and above to impress their significant other, working-class individuals close early from their day jobs (or even take the day off) to spend quality time with their lovers, and for those in long-distance relationships, it’s a perfect time for one person to remind the other that what they’ve got going on can actually work.

Few things make Valentine’s Day better than spending it with the one you love, and going the extra mile to make them feel special. There are those who would treat their partners to romantic dinners, and even set out on weekend getaways, but choosing to stay indoors with your lover is not a bad idea, either. As a matter of fact, it helps a lot with the process of rekindling bonds. You can cook together, clean together, read a book in each other’s arms, and in the later hours of the day, both of you can sink into the couch to see a movie that perfectly blends into the spirit of the season.

There is no wrong time to watch a romantic movie, but doing it during the Valentine season just rings differently. The energy is more intense, the storylines hold more meaning, and sometimes you are reminded of what the early, high-octane days of a romantic relationship feel like. Over the decades, we have been treated to local and foreign romance films that have made us coo, laugh, yell and even cry. Watching a movie by yourself is good, but watching a love-themed movie with the one person that dominates your thoughts day and night is even better. Here is a list of romantic movies you can binge on with your partner this season:

1.   Persuasion: Directed by Carrie Cracknell, this film is based on the Jane Austen novel of the same name. Starring Dakota Johnson and Henry Golding, it tells the story of a single woman who is reminded of her previous romance when the man she once loved has come home from the war. The two of them reconnect, remembering how their love once blossomed and decayed.

2.   Last Letter From Your Lover: directed by Augustine Frizzell, this movie stars Felicity Jones, Shailene Woodley and Callum Turner. Based on the best-selling book of the same name written by Jojo Moyes, Last Letter from Your Lover follows the young journalist Ellie (Jones). Working in contemporary London, she runs across an archive of love letters from the 1960s that details a tragic romance between Jennifer Stirling (Woodley) & Anthony O’Hare (Turner). Obsessed with this story, Ellie is compelled to find out just what happened to these two star-crossed lovers.

3.   Sylvie’s Love: Directed by Eugene Ashe, this film features Tessa Thompson, Nnamdi Asomugha and Wendi McLendon-Covey. It focuses on the story of Sylvie Farrell (Thompson), who finds herself deeply infatuated with Robert Hunter (Asomugha), a saxophonist who seeks employment at her father’s Harlem-based music store. Their connection only ends up being a summer romance that seems like it wouldn’t last. But as the years go by and they finally meet once more, they’re amazed to discover that they’re both still incredibly in love with each other.

4.   Malcom and Marie: The Sam Levinson-directed flick stars John David Washington and Zendaya. In this intense dialogue-driven drama, Malcolm is a filmmaker who has just returned from a movie premiere with his girlfriend Marie. However, their night has only just begun once they come home as they start discussing their relationship and make some uncomfortable discoveries that could reshape their entire future.

5.   The Lovebirds: Directed by Michael Showalter, this romantic comedy film stars Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjiani. It tells the story of young couple who are about to break up, but who (unwillingly) get involved in a bizarre murder case before they can finalize their split.
